As Kevin ascended the twisted stairwell, he considered the gloom of the archive room above him. He had never liked it here, although today it did have a certain attraction for him. âWhere are you?â he whispered.
âIâm in the K to M aisle,â he heard Rachaelâs whispered reply.
His heart began its now familiar beat in his ears as he made his way over to the K to M aisle where he could sense she was standing. âHi,â was all he could think of saying as he saw her leaning against the large storage boxes. The thought that she was stood there for the sole purpose of talking to him away from the prying eyes of the rest of the office took his breath away, and he struggled to breathe for a moment or two. She always looks nicer up-close than she does from further away, he thought, enjoying the fact that this encounter was enhanced by the fantastic scent of whatever perfume she was wearing.
âHi!â she replied, smiling broadly. âSo, this was your idea genius; what do you want to do?â
When he had seen her in the kitchen and asked her to meet him in the archive room, he hadnât really thought his plan through any further than that. âErr, well I was ⦠I mean I wanted to â¦â He was fumbling for his words, trying to stall in order to think about why he wanted to see her. âI ⦠wondered if you wanted to bring forward our ⦠erm, date,â he finally managed. âTo tonight,â he blurted out a hurried second later. âOnly if you're not doing anything, of course. I mean, I wouldnât want to interrupt if you already have plans.â
Rachael looked at him and smiled. It physically changed her face, it was amazing to watch. She was nodding even before the words could escape her mouth. âWell, I do have a date with a rather dreamy doctor tonight,â she replied.
Kevinâs stomach fell. He hadnât imagined this reply. Never, in this whole dreamlike scenario, did he even imagine that a gorgeous girl like Rachael would be free at short notice. âOh â¦â was all he could manage to say.
As Rachael watched his face twist in emotional pain, she couldnât live with the pretence any longer, she had to put him out of his misery. âBut Iâm sure I could just record that programme and watch it at another time,â she continued.
Kevinâs face screwed up in confusion and it caused her smile. Aw, bless, she thought, genuinely flattered that she could do this to him.
He shook his head and pursed his lips. âSo â¦?â he asked.
She lowered her head and smiled. âYes â¦â she laughed. âYes. Thatâd be great. What time?â
Kevin was once again lost for words. He hadnât thought this through at all. Today was Wednesday, Valentineâs day was on Friday, would he still even be able to get a table anywhere?
He began to laugh but looked a little dismayed when her face changed. It dropped from a beaming smile to a frown in less than a second.
